A couple of times a year, Nintendo releases a 20-40 minute long video showcasing exciting news regarding what we can expect from them in the near future. These videos are known as “Nintendo Directs,” and yesterday after a couple of weeks of speculation, They released what they are calling a “mini” version of their standard fare. Although the announcements weren’t as exciting as some would have hoped (no mention of Pokémon, Metroid, or Smash Brothers) they still managed to throw in some nice surprises! Below is a quick list of 5 of my favorite titles from yesterday’s presentation.
Celeste
To put it simply….I love a good challenge, and Celeste is looking to deliver exactly that. Although it’s one of two relatively selfish picks (sorry kids, parents need screen time too) there have been some thoughtful inclusions to the game. Having too hard of a time? Slow down the gameplay, or better yet make your character invincible. With some practice and dedication, your child can become a gaming legend, just like you!
Kirby Star Allies
Kirby’s back, and who doesn’t love that happy little pink puff? Four player simultaneous play means you can round up the team and save dreamland, as a family. It’s a beautiful thing, really.
Super Mario Odyssey DLC
Lets start with a vocabulary lesson. DLC – Downloadable Content. Although this is merely adding a new game mode to an already existing game, I’ll honestly take whatever reason Nintendo gives me to return to Mario Odyssey. Two modes task you with either hiding or finding a balloon somewhere in Mario’s sprawling world. Think of it as a whimsical hide and seek with our favorite plumber!
Mario Tennis Aces
Nintendo has a niche for taking sports based games, and simplifying them so that everyone can enjoy the action! Pick up a controller, or two, or three, or four, and get ready for some intense singles or doubles action! no one around to play with? Tackle the newly added single player story mode, or play online versus worldwide competition!
SNK Heroines
And for my final pick, another selfish one….sorry kids. I’m a huge fan of fighting games, and the Switch is a bit lacking in that department so far with a few exceptions. Although an original SNK fighting game wouldn’t get my vote over something Capcom could make (give us street fighter 4!) I’ll take what I can get. Watch out….come this summer, DadsaGamer is out for blood!
